Steam will use Proton by default for non-Steam games on Linux and SteamOS
The change landed in the client beta on October 7 and spares users from setting compatibility by hand.
The Steam client beta released on October 7 makes Windows executables added as non-Steam games run through Proton by default on Linux and SteamOS. Until now users had to open the shortcut's properties and pick a compatibility tool, or the game might not launch.
The update also fixes bugs when changing the target file or closing games started by external tools, and adds a setting to block the screensaver. GamingOnLinux notes the release notes do not say whether it affects existing shortcuts, nor give a date for the stable client.
